Every person enters the world in the same spiritual condition, separated from God because of sin passed down through the fall of man. No religious tradition, family heritage, or personal effort can change that starting point. There is only one way out, and that is through a genuine spiritual rebirth. Jesus made this clear in His conversation with Nicodemus in John 3, explaining that unless a person is born again, they cannot enter the kingdom of God. This new birth is not physical but spiritual, and it is the only doorway into a real relationship with God.
Once someone gives their life to Christ, they begin a journey through recognizable stages of spiritual growth. The first is spiritual infancy, a beautiful but dependent season where new believers need to be fed, nurtured, and cared for by those around them. The next stage, the spiritual child, is where many believers get stuck. Spiritual children tend to seek comfort over transformation, struggle to give or serve consistently, get easily offended over small things, and sometimes confuse gossip with prayer requests. These are not signs of bad character but of immaturity, and immaturity is meant to be outgrown.
Helping someone move through these stages requires modeling godly character in everyday life, teaching Scripture consistently, praying and worshiping together, and offering correction with love and patience. Spiritual maturity is not a product of time or church attendance alone. It is the result of intentional surrender. Mature believers study, serve, give, and disciple others. They understand that the church is not a place to be served but a community through which God serves the world. No matter where someone finds themselves today, the next stage of growth is always within reach, and all it takes is a willingness to surrender.
