Sometimes God's greatest works emerge from the most unexpected places. This truth becomes crystal clear when we witness the transformative power of faith in action across continents, from the bustling streets of Nairobi to the remote villages of Uganda.

What Does It Mean When God Uses Ordinary People for Extraordinary Things?

The story of David Livingstone in the mid-1800s perfectly illustrates this principle. When this missionary, doctor, and explorer vanished into the heart of Africa, many thought he was dead. But Livingstone was alive, barely surviving malaria, dysentery, and crushing loneliness in Africa's interior. What sustained him? An unshakeable belief captured in his own words: "I am immortal till my work is accomplished." Livingstone truly believed that because God had called him, God would sustain him until his mission was complete.

When Henry Stanley finally found him and offered to take him home, Livingstone refused. His famous response reveals the heart of someone called by God: "I am prepared to go anywhere, provided it be forward."

Can Anything Good Come from Nazareth?

This question, posed by Nathanael in John 1:45-46, reveals our human tendency to doubt God's ability to work through unlikely circumstances. Nazareth was a small, unremarkable town of less than a thousand people - the kind of place you wouldn't expect the Messiah to emerge from.

"Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.' And Nathanael said to him, 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?'" - John 1:45-46

Yet from this humble place came the Savior of the world. Jesus saw Nathanael's heart despite his skepticism, just as He sees us today in our circumstances, whatever they may be.

How Does God See Us in Our Current Circumstances?

When Jesus encountered Nathanael, He demonstrated something profound: "Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom is no deceit.' Nathanael said to him, 'How do you know me?' Jesus answered him and said, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.'" - John 1:47-48

Jesus sees you where you are right now. He's not waiting for you to get your life together or reach a certain level of spiritual maturity. He sees you, knows you, and has a purpose for you exactly where you are.

What Does Modern Mission Work Look Like?

Today's mission field reveals the same principles at work. In Kenya, we see young people responding to the gospel message in unprecedented numbers. At one high school presentation, despite a rainstorm that flooded the area, students remained engaged with the message. Over 200 students raised their hands to give their hearts to the Lord.

This isn't a one-time event. Week after week, hundreds and thousands of young men and women are coming to know Jesus through dedicated ministry efforts. The effectiveness is staggering - literally seeing salvations result from every dollar invested in the work.

Why Do Some People Refuse to Quit When Others Would Give Up?

The difference lies in understanding that great things come from unusual places and ordinary people. Consider DJ Mose, who came out of the disco and rock club scene in Nairobi. After getting radically saved 25 years ago, his ministry has now seen over a million salvations across multiple countries. During covid, when support was challenged, the ministry leaders didn't stop. Instead, they planted bananas, raised chickens, grew maize and sweet potatoes. They found ways to continue the work because they understood their calling wasn't dependent on circumstances.

What Does Jesus Say About Caring for Others?

Jesus makes it clear that our response to those in need is actually our response to Him. In Matthew 25:31-46, He describes the final judgment where people are separated based on how they treated "the least of these."

"Then the king will say to those on his right hand, 'Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'" - Matthew 25:34-36

But the passage continues with a sobering warning for those who fail to act: "Then he will also say to those on the left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink...'" -Matthew 25:41-42

How Do We Overcome Comfort to Hear God's Voice?

We live in a culture addicted to comfort. This comfort can become a barrier to hearing God's call on our lives. The challenge isn't that God has stopped calling people - it's that we have so much in the way that we struggle to hear His voice clearly.

When Jesus called His first disciples, they seemed to drop everything immediately to follow Him. Today, we often have so many possessions, commitments, and comforts that responding to God's call requires much more intentional sacrifice.

What Does It Mean to Go Forward with God?

Like Livingstone, we must be prepared to go anywhere, provided it's forward. This doesn't necessarily mean traveling to another continent, though it might. It means being willing to step out of our comfort zones to serve God's purposes.

Whether it's supporting missions financially, using our skills to help others, or simply being available when God calls, the key is maintaining a heart that says "yes" to God's direction.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to move beyond comfort and listen for God's voice. He may not be calling you to Africa, but He is calling you to something. Perhaps it's supporting missions financially, volunteering in your community, or simply being more aware of the needs around you.

Remember that great things come from unusual places - including your life. God sees you exactly where you are and has a purpose for you that may be bigger than you imagine.

Ask yourself these questions:
• What comfort am I clinging to that might be preventing me from hearing God's call?
• How can I practically care for "the least of these" in my community or beyond?
• Am I prepared to go anywhere with God, provided it's forward?
• What gifts, talents, or resources has God given me that could make a difference in someone else's
life?

The harvest truly is plentiful, but the workers are few. Will you be one who responds when Jesus says, "Follow me"?
