Today’s story comes from Matthew 17:24–27 — a moment that reminds us that God’s provision often shows up in ways we would never expect.

When Jesus and Peter arrive in Capernaum, the temple tax collectors approach Peter to ask whether Jesus plans to pay the tax.
Jesus gives Peter a surprising instruction:

“Go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Take it and give it to them for My tax and yours.” — Matthew 17:27

Peter obeys — and sure enough, he finds a coin in the fish’s mouth.
It’s just enough to pay the tax for both Jesus and Peter.

What’s incredible about this story is where the provision came from.
Not from a person.
Not from Peter’s savings.
Not from anything predictable.
But from a fish.

Jesus was showing Peter — and all of us — that God provides, but His provision doesn’t always come from the places we expect.
Sometimes God chooses unexpected methods to remind us that His power and timing are perfect.

There are seasons in life when it feels like we don’t see a way forward — when we’re uncertain, waiting, or holding onto faith for what’s next.
In those moments, this story reminds us that God already has a plan in motion.
He is working behind the scenes in ways we may not understand yet, but His provision will come — right on time and in the way that brings Him glory.

God’s provision may not come from where you’re looking, but it will always be enough.
Just like Peter’s coin, your miracle may already be in motion — waiting to be revealed at exactly the right moment.

Challenge

Where in your life do you need to trust God’s unexpected provision?

This week, cast out your line.
Offer God what you have — your trust, your time, your resources — and allow Him to work in ways you could never imagine.

Even when you can’t see how it will happen, trust that your “coin in the fish’s mouth” is already on its way.

 Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for who You are and for how You provide for us in unexpected ways.
Thank You for Your faithfulness through every season.
Remind us to trust You when things feel uncertain, and to believe that You already have a plan — and it’s good.
When we feel empty-handed, give us the faith to keep casting our line.
We love You and thank You for what You’ve done, what You’re doing, and what You’ve yet to do.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
